| Ghala Goans Celebrate the Feast of 'Goencho Saib' | |
| By Goretti Pinto, Oman / www.mangalorean.com Oman, Dec. 4: If you visit any Church or Christian house in Goa, you're certain to find an image of the state's patron saint, Francis Xavier, known locally with considerable affection as Goencho Saib. His feast is celebrated every year
on the 3rd of December with pomp and gusto by the Goans in India and all around the world. The Goans of the Holy Spirit Church Ghala Muscat, Oman, too celebrate it with all splendour. This year too was no different. It being a weekend the feast was celebrated on Thursday 1st December 2005, with a con-celebrated Mass in Konkannim at 7.15 PM followed by a Get-together. It was a privilege for the Goan Community, to be the first to celebrate Mass in Konkannim, after the Parish Council decided to allow every community to have their annual celebration on any one Thursday of the year, in order to inculcate unity and brotherhood among the multi-national communities of the Parish. Mannessarril, our Parish Priest, Fr. Albert DSilva, the Asst. Parish Priest of Sts. Peter and Paul Church Ruwi and our Guest Priest from Goa, Rev. Fr. Simon Fernandes concelebrated the Feast Mass. Rev. Fr. Simon was flown in especially by the Goan Community of Oman. Fr. Simon gave a very heart rendering and meaningful homily. The choir with Maria on the keyboard, Sanille on the Violin and Dominic on the guitar, sang melodious hymns and praises ending with the traditional hymn to St. Francis Xavier. After Mass, boiled grams (a tradition of all Goan Feasts), sponsored by Mr. Thomas Fernandes, General Manager of Majan Hotel, were distributed and then all proceeded to the basket ball court for the Cultural Progamme and Get-together. The Cultural Programme organized by Shalini and Tyrone then began, with a traditional Kunbi
Dance, followed by a song cum dance by the children and a wedding scene, which tickled the audience into laughter. It was then followed by a skit Gharachem Kestanv, directed by Seby Fernandes, which had comedy scenes and songs. To get the crowd more involved an exciting game of tambola was organized with attractive prizes and many lucky winners walked away with spot prizes too. Dominic and his lively band played nostalgic Goan and Portuguese songs which had everyone on the floor swaying and shaking to the beat. The mouth watering authentic Goan cuisine comprising of Sorpotel, Stew, Pulao, Cutlets, Salad and dessert was delicious and enjoyed by one and all. The vote of thanks was
proposed by Goretti Pinto and the evening very well compered by Michael Fernandes. The entire programme was ably conducted by a team of Goans of the Parish, led by Mr. Neville Fernandes the Goan Representative on the Parish Council, assisted by Mrs. Goretti Pinto, Mr. John DSouza, Mr. Bosco DSouza and Mrs. Shalini Henriques. The Committee wishes to thank all the sponsors, big or small, but especially, Mr. Thomas Fernandes, Mr. Agnelo Goveia, for their contributions in cash and kind and for having made this function a great success. | |
