The biggest problem with all of this is that I’ve got no available SMTP server to use, and I suspect that’s the case for many others as well. As I’m sure most of you know by now, Google requires|OAuth2|authentication to use gmail now, which I very much doubt is available for exim4. Google requires the developers of the software to enter some agreement with them, which reportedly costs quite a lot of money, to receive “Google approved” OAuth2 tokens (or something like that). The end result is that, for all intents and purposes, gmail no longer work for applications not “approved” by Google. Using so called “app passwords” isn’t available unless you enable two factor authentication, which leaves you at risk of being “locked out” of your account the next time you lose your phone, it’s stolen, it breaks etc, which makes this an obvious no-go.

I know that it’s possible to rent SMTP server access from other providers, but is it really necessary to make this a requirement for backing up openhabian? I also think the documentation should describe this whole situation, it seems like more and more providers come up with ridiculous schemes like OAuth2 to prevent people from using “alternative software” for handling e-mail.

Ca commence à devenir compliqué !
