The package name in Debian unstable (easy to backport to stable) is
"i810switch".  The project home page is at
http://vorlon.cwru.edu/~ames/i810switch/, but it does not seem to be
working tonight.

It does and I installed this utility. It says it is still "experimental" for the i855 and indeed it is (the crt flickers), but at least I could switch on the external monitor together with the LCD. Last revision of the program is from sept 2003. Hopefully an improved version will come out soon...!
