Not sure it is "best", but I found this seems to do the job:

        <property name="debug" value="true"/>

as in:

<ant basedir="." buildfile="centibuild.xml" target="gump" vm="1.2">
        <property name="ant.home" project="krysalis-centipede"
reference="home">
        <property name="debug" value="true"/>
</ant>
