As you have noticed by now, exolab's CVS server and most (if not all) cvs clients in use don't work with each other when you turn on compression. I noticed a similar behavior on our internal CVS server at work when we installed RedHat 8.0 - the problem went away when we switched to the CVS version distributed from cvshome instead of RedHat's RPM.
