Hi all,

I was just wondering how to calculate the "damage" a starship's hull would
take while landing on a planet?

I was thinking of the following: An Amphibious Assault on a hostile Planet.
So, a huge Fleet of Starships engage the Planet. The Battleships start
bombing the Planetary Surface from Outside the atmosphere(like
Shorebombardment in WW2 D-Day). Then the "Carriers" launch smaller
Fighters/Bombers wich enter the Atmosphere and act like modern
Bombers/fighters. They strike on local defensive enviroments, like Gun
emplacements etc. Then Landing-Crafts with Troops on board launch from
carriers in Orbit, entering the Atmosphere to land on planets surface.
Opening the cargo ramp - infantry will make the final step seizing the citys
on the planet. =)

Todays Spaceshuttles have Heat-Shields, so i realized i need to think about
the effect of the hull taking damage while entering the atmosphere...

So, i just need to know how to calculate how much of DR some things need, i
want to build with Vehicles 3rd Edition rules:

1st - For orbital Bombardment: I want the Battleships to use Rockets (like
Cruise Missiles). These Missiles must enter the Atmosphere too since they're
launched from orbit. So they need some sort of heat shield, right?

2nd - i dont want the huge battleships to be able entering planetary
atmosphere. They're build in space and that's where they'll stay forever! =)

3rd - Fighters, Bombers and Landing Crafts also need to enter and leave the
atmosphere. So are Shuttles, some smaller Transports etc.

Does anyone know if i can find something about that in any GURPS book? Or
somewhere else? I can remember reading something about entering/leaving
atmosphere in VEHICLES, but i think it was all about acceleration, speed and
so on...

Thanks in Advance,

Flo
