Other good high-tech and realtivistic treatments can be found in the 
Revelation Space series by Alastair Reynolds.  The first series can be a bit 
odd at times, but depicts some insane technology.  Want technology so 
advanced that it's indistinguishable from magic?  ya, they've got that.  
Computer systems that hide in plain sight as suns, killer hunter machine 
life that wipes out space-faring species, and guns that simply make bits of 
reality stop being there.  Good times.  They deal with FTL (to bring this 
back to topic :) in the "ya can't get there from here" way and one person 
ends up more than a little dead tryign to make themselves tachionic.
