Hello Folks,
Gone after a long absence, I've resubscribed to post the following
information. This presumes that some of you are not involved at GURPS
FORUMS and might enjoy having this data at hand for your own use
sometime into the future. I've noted a dearth of "FANTASY" oriented
material in the archives as of late, so consider this my modest
contribution to the fantasy aspect. Maybe somewhere along the way, a
new Alaconius lecture regarding GURPS MAGIC for 3e spells might emerge
:)

As the title suggests - I've compiled a general listing of areas per
nation based on what I could glean from the Yrth Map from GURPS FANTASY
2nd edition. It was the only map I could scan into my computer and then
import into Campaign Cartographer that contained all of Megalos,
Caithness, Al Wazif, Al Haz, etc AND had a scale for the map. After I
scanned the map onto my computer, I imported the bitmap into Campaign
cartographer. Then, I drew a line along the length of the scale to see if
it matched that of my CC map. It didn't - it was about 2+ times larger
than the scale of the map I had in CC Pro. Then, I rescaled the bitmap
until it matched the scale of the CC Pro map. Then, I traced the outlines
of each of the nations listed below as polygons - separate polygon for
each nation. There is a function in Campaign Cartographer that permits you
to click on a polygon and determine its area per the scale of your map.
The numbers as follows are likely within a 10% margin of error due to my
not being able to trace exactly the cost line on the bitmap. The problem
was do I trace the coastline exactly at the edges of the thick black
lines, at th middle of the black lines, or only on the "white/grey" areas
showing land itself? So, feel free to adjust these values by up to 10% (I
would suggest a more conservative 5%, but then again, you're free to do
with the numbers what ever your heart desires <g>).

Area of regions/nations
-----------------------------------------------------------
Megalos: 1.241 Million + Island: 56,762 square miles

Al-Wazif: 302,712 square miles

Al-Haz: 639,992 square miles
Al-Haz without Mountains:424,236
Great Valley Mountains: 215,756

Cardiel: 274,169 square miles

Great Forest: 153080 square miles
Caithness: 581,473 square miles
Caithness less Great Forest: 428,393 square miles

Sahud: 106,505 square miles

Zarak: 436,362 square miles

Araterre exclusive of Bilit Island or ring islands: 77,169
Bilit Ilsand: 38,319

Great Desert: 294,978 square miles

Areas not fully in scanned area:
Orclands
Djinn lands
Barbarian Lands

Why do my numbers look different now than previous postings? When I
originally worked on Caithness, I used the map provided in ORCSLAYER. I
then used a map of Caithness from BANESTORM and the numbers came out more
or less similiar. The map from FANTASY second edition is the only map that
has a LOT of the areas listed in one scanable region - which is why I
chose that map to work off of. I've no doubt that had I scanned the maps
from GURPS BANESTORM, the results would have been different - but not by a
lot.

In order to determine a population density value, divide population by
square miles, and that gives you the general population density of any
given nation.

Thus:
Caithness (exclusive of the Great forest): 6,000,000/428,393

I've also offered a fix at GURPS FORUMS to the effect that one should
perhaps halve the scale on the map to make the areas a little more
realistic for the histories as given in Yrth. Halving the scale has the
effect of quartering the surface area of the map. Proof: 10 miles by 10
miles of land = 100 square miles of land. 5 miles by 5 miles of land will
generate a region that is 25 square miles. 25 is 1/4th of 100 square
miles.

GURPS BANESTORM in my opinion still suffers from some problems - but that
is just me. One benefit of GURPS BANESTORM for those of you on this list
who may not have purchased a copy is that it contains population figures
for each of the various nations. Unfortunately - I can't say that this
alone is worth the price of the book. But, when given broken eggs, one is
inspired to create... well, you know <g>.

Enjoy :)
