In GURPS Old West there is a basic description of a keelboat, used for travel up
and down the Mississippi River before steamboats replaced them. They were 40-75'
long and 7-20' wide, pointed at both ends. Typical load was 30 tons. They were
poled by 16 men or towed by 20-40 men walking along the shore. In water too deep
for poling, there were six rowing positions. Some mounted a single square sail.
They did not travel at night; the crew slept on shore and any passengers slept
at a nearby farmhouse.
