Hello Folks,
Due to some changes in gaming schedules and the like, I'm back in GM
building mode for my face to face gaming group. We were playing D&D 3.5
but the campaign is on temporary hold until one of the members can get
back to the gaming group.
So, I've been asked to restart my Atlantis campaign - and I thought it
might be fun to get some creative juices flowing here on the list and
see what people who might have fun with this can achieve ;)

First - I'm working at detailing actual population numbers for various
nations for the gameworld of Atlantis. This is a preliminary step
designed to give me an overview of what is or is not possible based on
various population values. I got to thinking, one of the nations involved
in the game world is named Hesperia - which is an Amazon based culture.

The basic history is that at one point where Atlantis waned in its
domination of the world, Hesperia grew to become a super power of sorts
and began to conquor its neighbors. Eventually, it succumbed to an
internal situation that resulted in it having to fight a civil war and all
previous conquests were relinquished.

That having been said - there are some rather interesting things to
consider about such a nation and its history. If women are the
predominant warrior class of such a nation, what would its culture look
like, and how would it handle battlefield losses? How would such a
culture look upon the task of cultural and physical self-preservation?
More importantly - how does such a culture keep a sustained population
growth if its young women are off waging a war and/or dying on the
battlefield?

One could almost imagine that such an Amazonian culture might have to
develop what amounts to creche style child rearing. I wonder what kind of
effect this might have on a "family" in general, and how would such a
culture pass on its traditions? Who teaches the children loyalty to the
family if there is no real nuclear family such as we know today? If
loyalty transcends that of Mother/daughter/sister - how does it anchor
itself overall with the creche?

The other thing is - how are the gender roles enforced? Would the Amazons
regulate births and expose excessive male child births to "death by
exposure"? Would the women in even care how many menfolk there are?
Would the men be regulated in a free role within society or would they be
slaves or a combination thereof?

Lets see what thoughts come out in this and see how it might effect
society in general. Might be fun or so one can hope. :)

       Hal
