Hi
Has anyone played GURPS Lensman or used the Space Opera Combat System, from
the same book? If so, what can you tell about? I am planning a Space Opera
campaign and I am studing the SOCS and the GURPS Traveller space combat. I
must confess that I have just overlook both rules, but I appretiate any
info
one may give.
Thanks for any help
While my own homebrew GURPS Space Vikings (3rd edition) scifi-setting
is not strictly speaking space opera, nor do I use the SOCS system,
I have come up with some additional houserules which might be of use
for enhancing the gameplay.
For one, I am using a Dodge-modifier for spaceships, based on
their size and space acceleration.
Dodge Mod = (Space Acceleration x 2) - Size Modifier
(Where acceleration is in g:s and Size Modifier is as per GURPS
Vehicles or cSM+10 if using GUPRS Space 3rd revised.)
This means that small agile ships like light starfighters are very
easy to dodge with, whereas big freighters and capships have a very
hard time avoiding getting hit. This same modifier can also be used
for skill contests involving maneuverability - Big ships turn around
slowly, and small ones swiftly.. However, I enforce the Dodge cap of
14 from GURPS Vehicles - Any dodge roll of 15 or higher always
fails when dodging with a vehicle.
Also, I have reduced Armor and Deflector PD into half (+2 and +4)
while actively defending, and use the full values for 'PD Only'
rolls. This increases the importance of skill and maneuverability
for dodging.
Another of my favorite houserules for combat in space or otherwise,
is what I call 'Dodge This!', it allows a character to inflict
a penalty on opponents defense rolls by giving up sequence (acting
last that turn) and taking twice the defense penalty into
the base attack skill (also lowering the Acc limit and so on).
I only allow this for a single shot or strike, as the theory is
about waiting the whole combat turn for the best possible
opportunity to shoot or strike just once.
Hope these are of any use..
