Right. Regular spells /immediately/ affect a space, with whatever's
in that space possibly resisting.

This is not quite right. There's always a penalty for spells cast
without touching the subject, but it's only Area spells where a volume
of space is the the subject. (B239, 1st column, last there paras, 3rd
column, last two paras).

I must disagree with you sir. The very next paragraphs after your quote are the two types. Regular spells can be targetted volume-based, affecting whomever is there OR subject-based, with the spell auto-sensing the distance.

So just waving your hand or Staff through a victim's hex is worth a -1
to the Regular spell you are trying to zap them with.

So, for Regular spells, the distance penalties are as follows:

0 yards: -1 (i.e. close, but not touching)
1 yards: -1
2 yards: -2
3 yards: -3
etc.

Not, this is not what Eric Funk said. If I understood him correctly,
he claimed:
0 yards: -0 (i.e. close, but not touching)
1 yards: -1
2 yards: -2
3 yards: -3
etc.

I follow the example of the Long-Distance Modifiers (B241), where the shortest range before the first marker is 0 modifier.
