I think this is a point worth stressing.
The M56 Scorpion and M551 Sheridan are generally considered crappy AFVs, but
they were designed to a restrictive weight limit to allow allow being
aidropped. While the M551 was no match for a T72, you couldn't drop a a T72 out
of a plane (at least expecting it to still work ...).
Weight also matters fir bridges. While these may be destroyed after a war
starts, it's kind of hard to quickly move your heavy armor around *before* a
war starts if bridges collapse when your MBT tries to cross one.
Cost is also often a design restriction.
