This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the
GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial
redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on
a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until
I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these
days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml

The 'double issue' of this week presents the same ship twice, once as
a Vehicles design and once with the Spaceships rules. The twin versions
are not interchangeable in the same game, but they have a similar look
and feel in both systems.

Generation Ship v1.0 (TL10)
  Copyright 2010 by Onno Meyer

In settings without faster than light drives, interstellar flights are
long and tedious. Adventures might play out during critical times of the
journey, or with the arrival of a generation ship at a destination which
none of the current crew have chosen for themselves.
This design has a delta-V of 13,115 km/s, which allows her to cruise
at more than 2% of lightspeed. Acceleration and deceleration will take
many years, but they pale against the centuries spent coasting along.
The hull of the ship consists of a central cylinder housing the fusion
reactors and engines, and a flat disk spinning for 0.7 G at the rim. The
hydrogen tanks on the upper decks are converted into park areas when the
reaction mass is expended, which gives the mid-flight generations over a
million cubic meters of extra space.
Routine operations require some 200 crew, but services and the need to
raise the new generation bring the total complement closer to 2,000. Her
hydroponic recycling system was designed to operate at 99.8% efficiency,
so the supplies will last for 2,000 years with 2,000 people.
Upon arrival, the generation ship deploys miners and starts to build
an asteroid habitat. The generation ship carries 2,000 tons of payload
and 800 tons of subcraft for these tasks. Once this first habitat is
operational, the crew can either decide to colonize the system or to
refit and refuel for the return trip ...
The fusion rockets use 2,400 gallons of reaction mass per hour. A full
load of reaction mass and provisions is $78,000,000.

Subassemblies: Body +15.
Powertrain: Three 200,000-lb. optimized fusion rockets; twelve 50,000-kW
fusion reactors; 4,800 360,000-kWs rechargeable power cells.

rule) with the text format from Vehicles Lite.

Generation Ship, Spaceships Version v1.0 (TL11)
