Check you biases :) One might argue that you are looking to Science as a Religion. Many Physicists looked to the divine after science fails to offer the answers they are seeking.
One could argue they worship at the Altar of Celebrity instead. A lot of pat agnostics confuse non-belief with a lack of faith. Plenty of people have faith. Look how upset people get with media icons who fail from grace, by proving there are (horror-of-horrors!) human, like the rest of us. The fanbase' rage is a faith reaction. Religion is evolving, same as everything else. Its just gone full circle back to Hero Worship for many. Since people believe 'there is no smoke without fire' which is patently untrue, Faith and belief matter more than facts. Therefore, science in a nice idea, but religion is what the people want. Its down to the two types of intelligence. Emotional and Intellectual. Emotional is more real. Visceral. Instinctive. Safer. Stronger for most people. Intellectual is about Facts. Facts are all about perspective, bias and convenience. Always subject to question unless you paper them with faith in the source. You can't get rid of the religion without getting rid of the human.
