This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the
GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial
redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on
a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until
I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these
days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml

Orbital Laser Platform v1.0 (TL9)
Copyright 2010 by Onno Meyer
This orbiting laser weapon is a bit on the small side for a cinematic
Archvillain, unable to threaten entire cities or bases, but on the plus
side it can be launched by realistic carrier rockets. Alternatively, it
could be used for surgical strikes by a force with space superiority,
perhaps by Invaders from Outer Space ...
The Orbital Laser Platform consists of a 96-MJ laser, superconducting
power storage loops for fifteen shots, a target acquisition camera, and
small maneuvering thrusters. Hitting point targets like tanks requires
careful aiming, so the Platform will fire only a few shots during each
firing pass, followed by maneuvering to get into position for the next
orbit.
The fusion rockets use 0.8 gallons of reaction mass per hour.
Subassemblies: Body +2.
Powertrain: Two 20-lb. vectored fusion rockets; 2-kW RTG; twelve
270,000-kWs rechargeable power cells.
Fuel: 20 gallons water.

Orbital Laser Platform, Spaceships Version v1.0 (TL9)
Design 2010 by Kenneth Peters, color text 2010 by Onno Meyer
This orbiting laser weapon is a bit on the small side for a cinematic
Archvillain, unable to threaten entire cities or bases, but on the plus
side it can be launched by realistic carrier rockets. Alternatively, it
could be used for surgical strikes by a force with space superiority,
perhaps by Invaders from Outer Space ...
The Orbital Laser Platform consists of a 10-MJ laser, power systems, a
targeting sensor, and small maneuvering thrusters. Hitting point targets
like tanks requires careful aiming, so the Platform will fire only a few
shots during each firing pass, followed by maneuvering to get into
position for the next orbit. According to the Ground Fire rules in
Spaceships, p. 65, it needs a cloudless sky for effective fire.
It has an unstreamlined 10-ton (SM +4) hull about 30 feet long.
Systems Table
Front Hull System
[1-4] Metallic Laminate Armor (total dDR 8).
[5] Tactical Array (comm/sensor 4).
[6!] Spinal Battery (10 MJ laser).
[core] Control Room (C4 computer, comm/sensor 2, and no control
stations).
Central Hull System
[1-3] Metallic Laminate Armor (total dDR 6).
[4-6] Fission Reactors (one Power Point each).
[core!] Spinal Battery (central system).
Rear Hull System
[1-3] Metallic Laminate Armor (total dDR 6).
[4!] Spinal Battery (rear system).
[5] Fuel Tank (0.5 tons hydrogen providing 12 mps).
