This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the
GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial
redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on
a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until
I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these
days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml

Anachronistic Schooner v1.0 (TL2)
  Copyright 2010 by Onno Meyer

Modern adventurers have shown how oceans could have been crossed with
primitive boats. Backgrounds where such voyages become a reality rather
than a theoretical possibility might see custom craft like this little
schooner. The technologies would have been available in Greek or Roman
times, if shipwrights had seen the need to combine them ...
The 50-ton schooner has two masts with one lugsail each. Her captain
would never put much faith in unknown winds and currents alone, so she
has ten oars and a large crew. She can make 10 knots with a fresh wind,
and perhaps 2 to 3 knots under oars. She can even tack upwind, though
not as well as a historical schooner. The main problem is the lack of
navigation instruments -- compass and sextant would be unknown, so her
navigator can do little better than dead reckoning.
The Anachronistic Schooner can be sailed by four or five seamen, but
her usual complement is about twenty to allow for maintenance, repairs,
landing parties, malnutrition, and sickness. As listed, she carries 23
tons of cargo, but most of that are food, water, spares, and a few
small boats. A full load of provisions is $18,000.
