Hello Mike,

according to the WEG Star Wars game, the Millenium Falcon
was a heavily upgraded "stock light freighter". That fits
with her use as a smuggler in Episode IV, and also with 
her breakdowns: A civilian freighter got mil-spec drives,
that made her faster but less reliable.
