I think a good prequel background for the game Bunnies and Burrows would be
Poul Anderson's Brainwave.
Millions of years ago, the Earth entered a zone of Space which inhibited
electrical and chemical processes slightly, causing a reduction in intelligence
in all organisms. About a few years after the book was published (1950s) the
planet exits the field.
All life, under the handicap, had coevolved much more efficient brains. When
The Change happened, the animals and birds became as smart as people used to
be. The Retarded became as smart as Stephen Hawking. Everybody else becomes
transcendent singularities. In weeks we invent FTL. A few more weeks we have a
new language where each word contains paragraphs of concepts. A few weeks after
that we have developed psionics (especially telepathy) and other ineffable
abilities, and we abandon the planet to the animals and the ex-retarded.
It is one of my all-time favorite SF novels...I highly recommend it!
