Just as a thought, I wonder if the download and upgrade procedure was flawed
somehow? Should redoing the download and upgrade procedure be reperformed to
see if that corrects the situation?
Otherwise, I would definitely check with Tech Support by phone directly in
the morning over the problem.

When I upgraded to the latest firmware, like several others on the list,
the male voice on my BookSense did not work. All I had to do was remove my
battery. After doing so, I was able to use both voices successfully.
