[GW-Booksense] unable to figure out how to connect a usb flash drive to the booksense standard model

hi, 
  I am unable to figure out how to get a booksense standard to recognize a usb 
flashdrive.  It says in the manual that it will automatically recognize it, but 
it will not recognize it.  What am I doing wrong?
