It worked well on the 1.0 firmware but they boosted the level in the 1.1
firmware beta where it's too sinsitive on setting 1.

William,

I have found the internal microphone to be very sensitive. If one is
recording a speaker at a distance in a quiet room, it
performs very well. It is possible to distort the recording with the
internal microphone as you have noted, but I suspect
this is something that will be resolved with new software upgrades since
there is some ability to control levels there. One
has the ability to control microphone sensitivity from the recording submenu
of the global menu, but more range would be
useful. I have had very good success with an external microphone. For me,
the ability to have the flexibility of recording
on an SD card and to be able to use high-quality MP3 or WAV file formats
makes the BookSense a nice recording
device.
