Hi. Not sure if this totally fits what you're looking for, but Tom Clancy has written some pretty thorough books on the various special and armed forces. Sure, he's a fiction writer, but he's got a fare number of comprehensive nonfiction books as well. You can find many of his books on the nLS BARD site and in other places I'm sure.
