So what are they doing? Making it into a mini kindle with access for the blind? BTW -- I bought a kindle for my mother for Christmas and the smaller version runs over $250. The larger version for reading periodicals and newspapers is twice that. So the booksense isn't too awfully overpriced IMO -- it has a smaller market than the kindle and it is 100% accessible (for blind persons with hearing).
As for being marketable to sighted users, if I were sighted, I would go for something like the kindle over the booksense, even with a display, as a lot of technology goes into creating the kindle display so it is almost like looking at a printed page rather than a tv-type image of one. Also, the kindle's voicing feature is helpful not just for blind, but dyslexics as well. My sister-in-law is severely dyslexic and loves her kindle. So I doubt she would consider a booksense, which is designed for use by blind, when she can have a better display and voicing that she can turn off and still read.
