I don't know if you know about this, but I've had the occurrence
where I'm listening especially to a Bookshare book with the synthetic
speech, at a high speed, and the unit locks up. Just by chance, I
just gave the #5 key a quick push to reset the speed, and everything
worked fine. Don't know it that will help your situation or not; but
it may help others.

Hello
This is what led up to my having no speech as best as I can remember.
I was listening to a a book when my book sense suddenly stopped. I
had absolutly no sound, even the clock didn't work. I checked the
lock switch, it was fine. I plugged the book sense in and still
nothing. I tried a reset but I still didn't hear anything. I put
my book sense away in a little basket I left it alone for about two
or three days. I was talking to a friend and I mentioned to him
about my being unable to get any sound. He asked me if I had
accidentally turned off the speech, so, I got mybook sense and held
the number five down..
Nothing happened at first but when I plugged it in the turning on
music came on followed by Kate's voice.
I have tried to deliberately turn the voice off today to see if I
can discribe better what happened but now my book sense is behaving itself.
My friend is going to see if he can turn the speech off on my
unit. He did it once as well but he couldn't remember what he did.
