LOL -- Now really, after all that building up of Samantha sounding so evil,
I thought she just sounded like she had just had a wisdom tooth pulled and
had gause in her mouth. With a little imagination you might also say she
sounded a little loopy from the pain killer...
But evil? Nah, at least not on my pc.

You can also hear a demo of Samantha at the following link

some people really like Samantha, but to me, she sounds like a chain smoker
and just.... evil! It's hard to explain. You might hear her and like her
just fine. She's the voice on the Ipod and Iphone, as well as the victor.
You can probably hear a sample on the nextup.com website or even freedom
scientific under the realspeak solo direct voices. Unfortunately, that
wouldn't necessarily portray the horror that is Samantha since she doesn't
sound quite as scary for the pc as she does on mobile devices like cell
phones and the victor. Like I said, though, it's subjective, but she's
definitely one of those voices that either you will love or hate; dont'
think there's much middle ground with Samantha.

I couldn't agree more about Samantha. She scares me... badly! In fact, that
was 1 of the many reasons I got rid of the Victor and got the booksense. I
try to avoid Samantha at all costs; even my mom and dad's GPS uses samantha,
and it makes me cringe. She just sounds evil to me.
But, as you said, everyone has different preferences when it comes to text
to speech voices. Over all, I'm extremely happy with Kate and Paul; I don't
notice any significant mispronunciations, although I almost never read with
TTS voices unless I've got no other option.

The thing is, voices are always subjective. No one will ever win the
voice war, just like no one wins the Coke/Pepsi war even though Coke is
better, *smile*.

I personally didn't care for Samantha because Samantha sounds like she's
about to strangle you from her anger as she's reading. I don't want to
be reading a text file in fear that my voice will turn on me.

Many thanks.
