i tried turning off scripts, and the sluggishness did not go away, but when
i switched to cec access32 vwella, all sluggnishnes was gone.

I'm not sure the presence or absence of scripts represents the entire
story
with the sluggishness. When I simply switch synthesizers to DEC-Talk
Access32, my sluggishness goes away. Things are so much faster! Maybe they
would be even faster if I started turning off scripts, but I'm quite happy
not doing so if the speech synthesis problem could be resolved.

the lag time comes back. After all. calling scripts does take a little
