I know that my computer only has one sound card.
I have the choice of default card or a named card--which are both the
same in my case.
I know that some computers have two sound cards, so they are the ones
that really have a choice.

Since we have no idea what sound cards you have we cannot answer this 
question. You basically choose the sound card which you want to use. 
Typically the sound card which has the speakers connected to it will be 
a good choice.
