Have you turned the reading pane off under the view menu?

Does the fact that I use Ctrl-Y to go to a folder make a difference here?
It shouldn't in my opinion but who knows.
Thanks for any assistance on what could be causing the problem and what can
be done to permanetly fix it if that's possible.
