i have never figured out where the license is. but i am talking about the
default folder. there have been 2 times when i did not know if my backup
default folder was from a beta or the full version and when i copied my backups
into the new default folder after a w e reinstall, w e turned into a demo and i
had to install the full version over again.

This is not true. The license isn't stored in the user profile folder and
copying in files from an older profile folder won't turn WE in to a demo. You
do have to convert sets to the current format when doing this and in general
because of changes in the way WE does associations it is best to use the new
sets included with 7.0 when possible.

thas fine if you never setup your own set files, don't care about any of
the changes made with custom graphic dictionaries or custom exception
dictionaries. but i do and i would lose all of them.
i always miss something, you can not save all the set files because your
license is stored someware in the default folder and sometimes if you copy your
old files into the new folder w e can turn into a demo.

I personally wish I had done a clean install but that's just me; don't
think

it's supposed to matter but I like clean installs.
