Hi John,

On point #2, maybe both points, it sounds like you've got your preview
pane turned on.

If I remember right, this may be a setting that's saved with each
folder, so you may have to turn it off folder by folder.

To turn it off, choose the view menu, the reading pane submenu, and then
choose the "off" choice.
