This is a post that I hesitate to write, knowing as I do that some here are
sensitive toward anything that they perceive as criticism of their screen
reader of choice. But I've always tried to write what I see as the truth and
I doubt if I'll stop anytime soon. So folks, I'm just expressing my
concerns here and wondering if anyone else shares them. And maybe along
the way, someone will offer a suggestion that moves toward a solution for
me and for anyone else who might be struggling with a similar situation.
Here's the thing. When I run version 7.01 with scripts turned off, I find
the program to be just as reliable and "rock solid" as ever.
Unfortunately, when I do run scripts, I'm finding that to even term this
version as stable
would be a bit of a stretch. If scripts are running, I consistently run up
against errors at startup. And this is with running primarily the scripts
that were developed by GW Micro themselves. Further, this is happening on
several computers, be it those that I use for work or those that emphasize
more personal use.
Is it logical to say that all of them have problems? I don't think so. The
ram varies, the specs vary, even the scripts that I have loaded vary. But
the problem of instability when scripts are running remains the same. I have
one machine that displays a Window-Eyes error every time I try to update any
script. Note that I am receiving a Winow-Eyes error, not a Windowserror. I
posted a message the other day with the error spelled out, but received no
response, so maybe I'm alone in this.
Another script related problem that caused me grief was that one script
was letting dialog boxes take over the screen completely. For instance, if
I
opened "find" in either Internet Explorer or Firefox it took over the entire
screen and caused Window-Eyes to go silent. Turning off scripts solved the
problem./ The alternative would be to test the situation by turning off one
script then another then another and another until figuring out which one
was causing the problem. To me, that feels a lot like working with a beta
version which I am not doing. I simply don't have the time to be
constantly
diagnosing issues generated by some aspect of my accessibility software. The
ability to run scripts with a respectable degree of reliability is part of
what I believed I was purchasing.
Bottom line, my concern is that I have to shut off what is supposed to be
one of the primiere selling features of the Windo-eyes 7 series in order
to
get the program to run reliably and let me get some work done. Does anyone
else share my concern or am I alone in seeing what I'm seeing? That's what
I'm really wondering here. I can only add that such findings could indeed
affect future purchases. If I have to turn off a primary feature of a piece
of software, be it accessibility software or anything else occupying space
on my machines, I am compelled as a consumer to seriously consider my
direction in future purchases.
Ok, enough said. I hope the result of my expressing this concern will be a
positive and constructive move toward a solution. Thanks much for offering
