Hi Tom, I'm there guy. I went through the same thing, even got
bounced from an interview once when they found out I was blind.
At this point, my coverletter states that I am blind. I only apply
for jobs in my field at this point. I'm not a super-qualified guy,
but I do have a deploma and a trade sertification, and they cost a lot
of money at the time, so now I make it a point to only apply to jobs
I'm qualified for. Some of the people in my carreer counsilling
sessions don't like it, but I have a very professional technical term
that I throw at them which I won't print here, smiles. It is hard
enough getting in the door when I'm trained and qualified to do
something. When it comes to high turn over jobs like call center
work, I don't even have the hart. Back to the disclosure, I submit a
sharp looking application every time, and if they know up front that I
can't see and they don't want me, then they get my ultra-professional
turn of fraze thrown at them, and you can just imagine how much sleep
either of us loses over it.
On the flip side, if some one knows I'm blind and they call me to set
up an interview, then I can ask if there are any tests, and what they
are. I can ask for a reader and more time, because my inability to do
the task isn't related to the job I'm being hired for. This way, I
don't get nasty surprizes when I go into an interview. Believe me,
it's just as dishartening for me to find out in the interview that
there's a test or something that needs to be filled out, and not be
able to do it because of lack of preparation, as it is to them to have
me walk in and blindside them so to speak.
It shouldn't be that hard to take online tests, in fact, it should be
easier to take them online given the technology we have at our
disposal. At least if every one is on the same page to begin with
there are workarounds that can be applied for those times when such is
not the case.
Best,

I mentioned this in the past, but it reared its head again. I had an
interview scheduled for today, but it was canceled because I
couldn't access required tests, or could not complete them
satisfactorilly. Typing tests required reading from the screen while
typing. The Microsoft Excel test appeared to be a graphic or Java. I
am using Window-Eyes 7.01 with Windows XP Home. By the way, the
newest version of the shark won't work either. Why doesn't the
Windows Help Center work better? Can't Microsoft do anything about
this? Sorry to complain, but job hunting is never any fun,
especially now. Believe me, I do appreciate what GW Micro has done,
and I am also thankful for interaction with others on the list.
Unfortunately, there's always more to be done. That's life.
