I used that editor many years ago and no longer remember all of the options 
that it had, but I would check two things.  
Your default font may have changed over the years, and some fonts increase this 
kind of thing.  Also, as resolution 
increases, the font that was previously assigned may not have scaled and you 
may be using a very small font.  Small 
proportional fonts seem to be problematic.  

Vaguely, I seem to remember PFE having some cursor options.  If it does, it is 
worth playing with those to see which 
works the best.  Often there are such options such as System, underline, block, 
vertical bar, etc.  I looked at a lot of 
editors and it could be that I am remembering wrong, though, but take a look 
just in case.
