Dan I am glad you brought this up as that thought dawned on me when scripting was unveiled. Personally, I love scripting as it adds a lot of convenience -- and that's the purpose of using a pc.
The real reason, of course, that the WE devvotees, marketers, and apologists made that argument at that time was marketing. You have a product that doesn't have a given capability, and you need to explain it away. Of course, when given the convenience, we all use and embrace it. What's the lesson: well, marketing drives statements made from those with vested interests. Hence, take what they say with a grain of salt realizing why they may be saying what they say. Place markers, scripting, and other recent enhancements in WE have made the program far more functional and marketable. And, of course, the purpose of software isn't to display the power of the operating system but rather add functionality for end users. And that's what scripting has done -- and none of us, even those of us (including yours truly) who bashed JFW for scripting, don't ever want to go back. My only regret is that GwMicro hadn't used scripting far sooner. A Quaker watched as his new, wealthy neighbor unpacked truckloads of furniture, clothing, and decorative items. He then went to greet the man and said to him, "Neighbor, if thee hath need of anything, please come to see me and I will tell thee how to get along without it." --David Jeremiah, Turning Point, Daily Devotional http://www.davidjeremiah.org If you reply to this message it will be delivered to the original sender only.
