Hi, I could be rong, but I think it is to do with accessibility flaws in the development environment used to build face book. Mac Voiceover actually works a fare bit nicer with facebook than the windows products do, but then, I don't use it for all that much other than super-poking the odd person and reading the forums on some groups.

Best,

Hi Jamie,

I listened to this podcast, and I am a facebook user. But I was hoping they
would go into a technical reason as to why screen readers such as
Window-Eyes don't recognize some of the facebook links as actual links. For example when someone posts something to their wall you can comment on that post. But the comment link is not recognized as a link or an onclick, you
have to use your mouse pointer to click on it and refresh browse mode
manually to access it. It seems like there should be a better way. I
wonder if this is a problem with Window-Eyes or facebook. I don't really expect that you would know the answer to that, but hopefully someone can
comment on it because it certainly is a pain.

You can learn about using Facebook with screen readers in general by
listening to the latest Tech chat found at:

It may help.

Hi Rick,

The trick to using Facebook is to route your mouse pointer to the link. This is not exact so you may need to move around to find the link. Then,
turn browse mode off. Next, do a left click. If the page does not
automatically refresh, manually turn browse mode back on.

Also, you may need to use your mouse keys to read some of the information. This can be confusing because Facebook hhas adds and other stuff on the page. If you are reading a list with your mouse keys, clicking on any one of the items will usually put the information in a position where you can
use your regular arrow keys.

My best advice is to learn one feature at a time and expect some
frustration. If you know people who are using Facebook, contact them via
phone or email and ask them to send you a friend request. That's the
easiest way to get started.

HTH

Janet
