I bet every brand has had some model that didn't turn out well for it. I'd suggest paying more than you want to in order to buy a faster processor, more memory, and a bigger battery than you want. This way it may keep from going obsolete quite so fast.
I did this with a 14 inch screen on a Dell Inspiron and have generally been happy, even with the increased load Vista imposes. BTW, I'd also choose Vista over XP, as it has increased security, and some nice freebies such as voice recognition. Try not to pay for an expensive screen, which can really increase the price of a laptop. Work with the salesmen over the phone to get the most laptop with the least screen he can provide. Buy a name brand with lots of support (like Dell), and not a bigbox store brand with minimal or no support.
