Hi. If you're tearing your hair out over
how complicated Facebook is, don't worry. If you go to
http://m.facebook.com
That's the mobile version of the site, which is meant for people to
use on a PDA or your phone.
All the links are very clearly labeled, you can update your status,
comment on other people's statuses, send messages to them, connect
with friends from school and I believe uploading and managing photos
is also a lot easier to do as well, admittedly I haven't tried it
yet. But I use that version of the site exclusively now. The
regular version is an absolute nightmare to use with WE or any other
screenreader I've tried with it. Some are better than others but
over all, the mobile version is, at least for me, the best way to go
when it comes to using Facebook. and say what you will about the
site, but it's how people are communicating these days and if you
want to stay in touch, it's good to use.

Dear Vic,
Thank you for your well stated message! Sure "FaceBook" may seem like a
frivolous indulgence to some, unimportant to the serious grown-ups among
us, but I need to learn to use Facebook for my job, and it is *so
complicated, I am having so much trouble with it. I wish that GWMicro
would create a tutorial for using Facebook, and Twitter too. That would
be the most efficient way to learn it. I have lots of other job
responsibilities as well. What I need to do is learn to use the social
networking site and to be able to access the information there as
quickly as my sighted colleagues. I don't have hours and hours
available to turn on and off browse mode and do all the other
work-around things that seem to make the site "mostly possible" for
others.
And that's what most of the people I ask who use the site say, "Well,
you can do most things..."
I need to do *all of the things that everyone else is doing, and in an
efficient way. I am not finding a solution.

Hello John:
Just because Face Book is not for you, it doesn't make it wrong. It is
just the next step in social networking.
We continue to face this as new technology arises . This happened with
the telephone, cell phones, the Internet, personal computers, and so on.
Many of us find ourselves expending a lot of effort to maintain the
status quo. How often do we find ourselves working for an employer
whose motto seems to be something like "we support yesterday's
technology tomorrow" :)
On the subject of cell phones, who would have thought that texting would
be as popular as it is and that the word text would be changed into a
verb?
On the new technology front children are even playing with one another
differently. Look at the XBox Live phenomenon. More and more children
play with their friends in an on-line collaborate environment then ever
before. Many of these friends they have met at schools, scouts, cadets,
etc. Yet there are people with whom they interact who they have never
met in person. This is becoming a challenge for parents. Also for
children living with vision loss or a vision impairment this is going to
be one of the challenges we face. I suspect they are being left behind
in this arena. They may be intergraded or included in "the mainstream"
however they might be isolated, because they are not able to take part
in these on-line collaboration games.

Guys, ladies, gentlemen, can someone in plain English explain the
facination with Facebook? I am genuinely interested to learn why the
world and his wife are on Facebook.
