Hi John,

my info is for word 2003; I believe it would work in 2007, but am not
sure.

the location of the cursor is shown in the status bar (press control
insert s to read it).

tabs unfortunately are complicated.

they are a paragraph formatting option, not a document option. this
means you'll need to set them in a paragraph style (by modifying the
style) which you are using to really be sure that they are being applied
everywhere, or, select the entire document after you've typed it, and
then set the tabs, and those tab sets will apply to the entire document
as direct paragraph formatting.

It's possible to set them on one paragraph, and as long as you keep
pressing enter to create new paragraphs and go down the document typing
as you go, the newly created paragraphs will copy their paragraph
formatting options from the previous paragraph, and so will carry along
your tab settings.

It's easy though to go insert a paragraph later and find it doesn't have
the tab settings, if you try and count on this way of doing tabs.

notice I haven't even mentioned how to set them yet, it's more important
you understand how they work.

BTW, Word has default tabs of every half inch, and you could just use
theirs if you only need a few indents.

Anyway, if you want to set them for the current paragraph, or the entire
document if you've pressed control-a, you right click (or press the
context menu key), and press p until you come to the paragraph format
option, and choose it).

A dialog will open, and in there is a command button for setting tabs,
and alt-t is it's shortcut.

in this dialog you can keep typing a number into the edit box (in
inches) and choosing the "set" button, to set the tab at the place
you've entered, with all the options which are specified in the other
controls here (like where it's a left or right tab, and whether it has
dot leader).

in the edit box, window eyes doesn't tell you, but you can press the
up/down arrow and see all the different tab settings for the paragraph
this way; you can choose one you want, and edit it or clear it.

hth,

Chip
