Yeah we get clobbered as you put it for everything over here. So using
the netbooks now is a great thing. Mine is great the harddrive is the
same size as my main pc in terms of copasity the ram is only 1 gb but
that's usable and the cpu is something like a 1.6 and it works fine.
It's way slower than what I have now but it does the job just fine.
Honestly if this technology was around a few years ago then I wouldn't
have entertained any of the blind friendly note taking devices I have
bought myself over the years.

John, with all that gear you should no the ins and outs of it all. Just
want to ask though, what's this Small Talking device? Would save me
some searching if you tell me, (smile).

Certainly the all-in-one integration of these devices does appeal to
some, and they usually have supperior batter life too - though as I
said, the Netbooks are better now than portable PCs used to be.

So, yes it all comes down to cost and convenience. That factor does
mean that, in the software arena, you might decide to get by with
something like Scan2Text for OCR work selling for around sixty quid,
rather than pay six hundred for all the convenience bells and whistles
of Kurtzveil. (Even picking that up second hand I fear you might be
clobbered in the UK for re-registering it, being charged no less than
£75 for just changing the name and address that goes with the licence
number.)

Maybe many listers won't know what I mean but, in a UK context, makes
MPs scamms look not quite so bad.

Ray.

Hi there list.
Very interesting Darran concerning about a voice sense or a pda or
netbook. I personally have the best of all worlds using the braille
sense plus a netbook and a main computer. You have to ask yourself what
and why do you want the machines. I love my braille sense the ability to
read in braille the tnauk newspapers and also the ability to listen to
streams of the net. my netbook is fantastic as it is windows xp and has
every thing on it I need. the braille on the bsp is also very good for
the gps when on trains buses and even walking about. I am away from home
a good deal playing chess or piano tuning so portability is everything.
in this situation my netbook scores as regards to the net as I have a
usb mobile stick pay as you go that somehow let's me listen to talking
books via my netbook and use skype without any charge. I cannot explain
this but this is the truth about this point. my bsp I have to connect
via my mobile phone using the bluetooth connection or walking hot spot
which makes the phone useable as a wireles device. so to sum up it all
depends on what your needs are. another use with my netbook is I can
hear my local football tem commentary and the yorkshire cricket
commentary. I cannot do this with my braille sense plus as for example
the cricket is only for real player. maybe in the upgrades with the bsp
this may alter. as Ray said if you are looking at the voice sense you do
not think about the braille but for me the braille is great. I think
gwmicro are the best blind orientated company and I am waiting for the
small talking player they will bring out soon to come out. I wonder if
we will see one at sight village. hth
