How do you compensate for no numerical keypad?
Thanks.

Subject: Craig's question about NetBook layouts

  Cheree Heppe here:

The Acer Aspire 1 NetBook which I own doesn't use the FN key for much. If I
want to select from a part of a document or E-message to the bottom, I press
the control, shift and FN keys, which are all next to each other,
simultaneously, the text is selected and I press delete. That's my only use of
the FN Key.

  Layout.

This may not be a very technical rendering of a keyboard layout, but here
goes.

Looking at the opened NetBook's screen from the user's position at the
keyboard, on the right front of the lower half of the NetBook's case, just near
the right front edge is a slider switch that selects the Internet capability on
or off.

Along the left side is the power jack rearmost, a port for an external video
screen next, then an ethernet jack for a phone line connection, a USB connector
and front most, one of two slots for an SD card.

The right side, from rear to front, has what I think is a port rearmost to
lock the NetBook to a desk or whatever with a cable, the second SD slot next,
two USB connector ports, earphone and microphone jacks.

  The keyboard.

From left to right nearest the screen:

esc key, function keys 1 through 12, two keys I don't use, an insert/overtype
key and rightmost, the delete key in the upper right corner.

The bottom most row of keys are:

control, FN, win key, alt key, spacebar, alt key, application or context menu
key, control and the three arrow keys in a row, left, down and right arrow.

Down the right side is the previously mentioned delete key at the top most
right, backspace, backslash, enter, shift, pagedown and then the bottom most,
right arrow key, already mentioned.

The up arrow key is just above the down arrow key, but in this keyboard,
there is no delineating space setting off the arrow keys. The arrow keys on
this keyboard are spaced like keys in the typing rows.

The leftmost keys are the previously mentioned escape key at the top left,
the key that does grave accent, the tab key, the caps lock key, shift, and the
previously mentioned control key,.

The rest of the keys are arranged like the regular keyboards.

The mouse pad is as wide as the spacebar and is positioned just below the
spacebar. The left and right mouse click buttons are vertical bars that
parallel the left and right sides of this mousepad. Some sighted reviewers
say the pad is hard to use because the left and right mouse click buttons are
not in the under-the-mouse pad position, but my sighted daughter has used my
NetBook with nary an eyeblink over the mouse pad configuration.

At the top center, just above the screen is a web cam. I don't use that
much, but people have said they can let it run and show friends a room while
walking around with the NetBook in heir hand, etc.

The battery is positioned along the back bottom of the NetBook and comes off
if necessary by means of a slider switch under the NetBook at the rear left.

That's the keyboard in possibly too exhaustive detail.

I like this NetBook because I can use my right hand alone to navigate some of
the commands and because it is a good working machine for what I use it for. I
like the leatherette slip cover that goes over the NetBook. I can keep it
clean by lying the cover on top of the closed NetBook on my desk or with the
cover slid over the NetBook I can stash the NetBook in my purse or stood up
like a book in with books.

  Regards,
  Cheree Heppe
