there was no error for WE to report when I finally got it going again. I alt-Tabbed from IE8 to Notepad and lost speech and couldn't unload WE 7.1 beta 1 nor restart the PC via the Start Menu. The second instance was when I quickly alt-tabbed between Outlook Express and a telnet type of client called Gmud.
