My experience has been with Notes 6.x, but, I have seen similar problems.  I
managed to get to behave relatively well by maximizing the current window
and when it goes weird(stops announcing read/unread), I focus on a different
window then go back to the notes window.  Also, be sure that the most
current sets are loaded for Lotus Notes.
