i don't think so.
if you have pressed f8 to toggle the preview pane this will change the
status in the layout pull down too.
the view\layout too.

OK, here it is.
A few mins. ago, Message Preview Pane again became checked. For some
reason hitting Enter on a message enables Preview Pane thus the need to
again uncheck it.
Hopefully, this will be resolved in final as I haven't found a way of
navigating Thunderbird with this option checked.
