Well, I'm going to make more people mad probably, but I'd say in
general, that's a good idea in general, going intel.
My buddy up in Ok swears by amd, and lots of folks have good luck
with them, but I think intel stuff still tends to have a
compatibility edge, and especially when it comes to chipset and
motherboard issues, and considering everything is written for intel
anyway, it's the way to go.
I know for most situations in the type of work I do, the music suff,
intel is king of the hill.
Some of the big sample machines that run 64 bit vista are amd boxes,
but by and large, intel is used, and of course the apple pc hybrids
doing dual boot are intel machines.
My take on it is that it isn't so much the processor differences but
the chipsets that are pared with amd machines as compared to intel machines.
One thing that is a dead giveaway is that if you install windows on
an intel box, it'll find way more stuff without installing drivers
than if you do on an amd box in general.
It's a really close thing, and the cooling issues aren't as much a
factor as they used to be.
I'm glad amd is around because intel would still be making us run 486
machines if it weren't for good stiff competition.
I can testify that the two times I've had amd machines, I've been disappointed.
And they are definitely cheaper.
But often you get what you pay for.

Loy and all,
If you get a Dell laptop, my recommendation would be to get an Intel
processor in it. Don't get an AMD processor as the video card or drivers
are a pain to update. When we set our machine up a couple of years ago, we
had to run a demo of the competition in order to get WE to run. Hopefully
that won't be necessary anymore.
