Hi, You could try checking your verbosity menu and see if there's a place to uncheck the item that refers to Custom control. Also, you can do a search in the WE manual, under the index section and see if there's helpful information there. Or, when you hear "Custom Control" press control plus shift plus question mark to get help.

Hi Ken, To understand what a custome control is, first you need to understand that controls are things you can interact with on the screen. An edit box for example is where you type something. A rich edit is an edit box that does smart things for you, like making http addresses so that you can click them and go to a web site. Treeview and list controls show lists of information like the files and folders on your computer. Check box and radio button controls let you choose yes, no, or one or the other thing. If that wasn't obscure enough, now we get to custom controls. When a program is designed, the programmer can use the standard edit box, check box, button, listview controls that come built in to the language system being used to design the program. Or, the person can make their own thing that looks and acts like one of the standard controls... only it isn't. This is a custom control. Window-eyes calls everything it doesn't recognize a custom control. The reason you might hear custom control when a program starts is that many programs have what is called a splash screen, and splash screens are often built from scratch by the program designer. The purpose of a splash screen is to keep you ocupied for the 2 seconds it takes for the program you just opened to load and be ready for use. Often the splash screen has copyright information and a logo. Some have anamations and other things that are entertaining to the visual user who needs something to draw their eye while they wait for the program to open. As I said, window-eyes will more often than not fail to recognize the splash screen for what it is and read it, because of the design. Therefore, it will tell you a custom control has focus when you open a program. Then of course it will go off and read the program itself very nicely most of the time.
