Jed,
It sounds like you installed the ANSI build instead of the Unicode one.
Install the version from this link:
http://miranda.googlecode.com/files/miranda-im-v0.8.3-unicode.exe.
If you still have problems, I suggest you contact the Miranda IM
developers directly.
