I will have to read that story. My brother also totally blind had a
friend giving him directions and was driving down Sepulveda early one
morning in Van Nuys CA. A cop pulled him over and ask to see his license, I
think he had a bad tail light or something. Frank said I don't have a
license I'm blind. The officer than wrote out a ticket than instructed him
to get in and drive back home with him watching because he wanted to see how
he did it.
The fine was $500 but my brother aproached that wrong. Had it been me I
would have told the judge the cop put me back behind the wheel and ask the
judge to either fine him for allowing me to drive the second time or to have
him split the $500 between us.
That was in the 70's I believe.
I think Tom sullivan in his movie and book also drove. Many blind folks are
fascinated with driving and if given the chance would gladly do it.
If the technology can be developed that would allow us to drive our freedom
would be unparalleled. Nothing since the computer could make greater inroads
unless the startrek technology with the teleporter could eclipse that.
Imagine being able to go where you want when you want without relying on
public transit or sighted assistance. What a carrot to encourage blind
folks off government assistance and in to the workforce.
I think the people driving were blind high school and college students so
the driving would naturally mean more to them.
Generally Dating in America is easier when the guy can drive I suspect
psychological studies would concur.
Because people are young they dream usually the older folks become jaded and
scheptical.
Many of those scheptical folks say why should we change our websites to be
accessible blind people on computers? That's the dumbest idea I ever heard
of.
Glad Gw-micro doesn't listen.
the unemployment rate is still way to high but we are breaking through the
walls of segregation are crumbleing.
I wonder if like the space program the development of "drivable cars" for
the blind might contribute in other ways to technology.
Improved navigational systems, improved vehicle design maybe even
development of cars that drive themselves leaving time for people to do
other things such as talk on their cell phones lol.
Maybe this technology will cause employers to see us differently and take
more chances hiring. Maybe the new technology will create more consumer
demand and stimulate a faltering econamy. Maybe a spin-off might be
alternative energy sources for the car.
Maybe it would create a new type of job that blind people could earn a
substantial income doing.
Maybe, just maybe the creation of this product would result in the creation
of other necessary products that gw-micro would develop and market like they
did with the braille sense.
Even if the bliend friendly car never gets off the ground like space travel
it keeps people dreaming. One small step for a man may become one tremendous
step for humanity.
Tranquility base, the eagle has landed!

Actually, one might deem the subject as relating to Window Eyes. At least
in my case, the 74 Cutlass had no windows, and I had no functioning
eyes<grin>.

Oh my the list police are out in rare form. Actually the vigilanty
border patrol would be more like itbecause the only power they have is to
blow off steam in fact can't even make a citizens arrest!
How many things do I see on this list totally unrelated to window-eyes.
But the reaction and the editorialization are unrelated as well.
So is my reaction so I labeled it ot which in english means off topic.
Hope that's clear by the subject line but just in case your speeding
along through these post without your vibrating vest slow down.
Stop! Smell the roses, take a deep breath and have a great day!
God bless!
Mike
PS and Unrelated Terri is Cable really lots faster than DSL for a totally
blind user with window-eyes assuming he / she uses the fastest DSL and
does it make a difference?
What would I notice if it does? I love speeding on the internet.
The fix it tickets are what I don't like lol.

That's the dumbest project the NFB has come up with to date! There's
enough sighted people on the roads who shouldn't be driving.
And what does this message have to do with this list anyway?

Hello All, Thought this article might be of interest to all.
20 blind people are able to test drive dune buggy designed by Va. Tech
students
02/08/2009 12:56:00 AM
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
COLLEGE PARK, Maryland - Several blind people were able to get behind
the wheel of
a new high-tech vehicle designed by Virginia Tech engineering students.
Twenty blind people took turns manoeuvring the retrofitted dune buggy
Friday in a
parking lot at the University of Maryland. The test drive capped a
National Federation
for the Blind summer camp for 200 blind youth from across the country.
Virginia Tech was the only university to take on a 2004 challenge from
the federation
to build a vehicle that could let blind people drive.
The buggy they designed uses a laser sensor to figure out the road
ahead. A special
vibrating vest worn by drivers communicates speed and warns when to
stop. And a headset
relays voice commands signalling which way to turn.
