Once you do a "Forward Message" command, usually with Ctrl-f from the open message, or once you "Reply", usually Ctrl-r, or "Reply to All", usually shift-Ctrl-r from the open message, you will find that you are free to edit both the sender's and your own added message at will, including a complete deletion of everything in the message field. So, in brief, you can't edit a received message, unless you save it and then edit the save. But you can edit any kind of reply or Forwarded message.
