Indead, you have to close a red message with shift-tab to go
back to the list or press tab a few times.
However: in the tools/general menu, you can make your own hotkeys to do
things. The escape key is defined in this menu as quick option key, so
you can undefine it and use it for something else. I have not tried this
myself, but it must be possible.
I am a Becky user too.
